Why We Might Recommend Surgical Tooth Extraction
There are several reasons why you might need a surgical tooth extraction. The most common is an impacted wisdom tooth. In this case, the tooth is stuck beneath the gumline and can’t emerge on its own. Impacted teeth are problematic because they can be painful and lead to infections and other dental problems.
Dr. Kauffman may also recommend surgical extraction if a tooth is severely damaged or decayed and can’t be saved through other treatments or removed with a simple tooth extraction. Finally, surgical tooth extraction may be necessary if you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment and need a tooth removed to make room for other teeth.
The Surgical Tooth Extraction Process
Your comfort comes first, so we’ll ensure you’re settled comfortably in the dental chair. If you have opted for sedation, we’ll get that underway so you feel pleasantly relaxed and calm before the process begins. Next, Dr. Kauffman administers a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth.
In the first step, the dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and surrounding bone. He’ll then use special instruments to loosen the tooth from the socket and remove it carefully. In some cases, he may need to divide the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.
Once the tooth has been extracted, Dr. Kauffman will clean the area and place stitches to close the incision in the gum tissue. He will place a gauze pad over the extraction site to help stop bleeding and encourage blood clot formation, an essential part of healing.
