Digital Dentistry

Technology only matters if it changes what happens in the chair. Dr. Thomas W. Kauffman has stayed at the leading edge of dental technology since the start of his career in 1977, adopting new tools as they have matured.

At his downtown Atlanta practice, digital tools are not separate gadgets pulled out for special cases. They are part of how nearly every visit works, from a routine cleaning to a complex implant case, and they are there to make your visit more comfortable, more efficient, and more predictable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Perimetrics InnerView® is a diagnostic device that measures what is happening structurally inside a tooth or implant, something traditional exams and x-rays cannot fully capture. Cracks, loose restorations, and implant instability often start beneath the surface long before you feel pain or a problem shows up on an x-ray.

How the Scan Works

During your exam, Dr. Kauffman uses a small handheld device that delivers a series of gentle micro-taps to the tooth or implant, each lasting only a couple of milliseconds. Sensors capture how the tooth responds, and the device's software analyzes that data to generate a numerical reading of the tooth's structural stability.

The entire process takes about three seconds per tooth, involves no radiation, and feels like light tapping rather than a procedure.

Tracking Change Over Time

What makes InnerView especially useful is the ability to track that number over time. Dr. Kauffman can record a baseline reading and compare it at future visits, which makes it possible to catch subtle structural changes early, sometimes before symptoms or visible damage appear.

As a beta tester for this technology, Dr. Kauffman has been able to offer this level of diagnostic insight to his Atlanta patients ahead of most practices.

Your Routine Dental Cleaning and Exam

During a typical exam, Dr. Kauffman uses digital x-rays that develop instantly and expose you to significantly less radiation than traditional film. An intraoral camera lets you see what he sees, magnified on a screen, so you understand exactly what he is evaluating and why. You leave with a clearer picture of your own oral health, not just a clean bill of health you have to take on faith.

Catching Problems Before You Feel Them

Dr. Kauffman is a beta tester for InnerView® diagnostic technology from Perimetrics that measures the structural integrity of a tooth in ways a visual exam or standard x-ray cannot. During your exam, it gives him an objective, measurable reading instead of a judgment call. For you, that means problems can be caught and treated while they are still small, simple, and inexpensive to fix, rather than waiting until you are in pain.

Dental Implant Planning

If you need a dental implant, Dr. Kauffman uses CBCT 3D imaging to see your jawbone, nerves, and sinuses in detail, which a flat x-ray cannot capture. He plans your implant's exact position before he ever picks up a handpiece, using a digital surgical guide built from that scan. You benefit from a more precise placement, fewer surprises during surgery, and a plan you can actually see and understand before you commit to it.

Same-Day Crowns with CEREC® Technology

Instead of a messy physical mold, Dr. Kauffman takes a digital impression with an intraoral scanner, capturing an exact 3-D model of your tooth in seconds. Using CEREC technology, he designs your crown on screen with CAD/CAM software, then mills it from a ceramic block right at our office. You wear a temporary for zero days because there isn't one. One visit, one trip downtown, and you walk out with your final crown already in place.

Complex Cases, Fewer Visits

For full-mouth reconstruction or multiple procedures at once, Dr. Kauffman combines CBCT imaging with CEREC and digital planning to map your entire treatment before starting. Add sedation, and you can often complete steps that would normally take several appointments in a single visit, then wake up with significantly more accomplished than you expected.
