Cleanings and Exams

Think of a routine dental checkup as a reset for your oral health. Every cleaning clears away what has built up since the last time. Every exam catches small issues before they grow, so that you can walk out with a clean slate, knowing your smile is healthy.

Dr. Thomas W. Kauffman wants that for every member of your family. You might even be pleasantly surprised by the peace of mind that comes with knowing your smile is healthy and problem-free.

No Judgment, Just Solutions

If it has been a while since your last visit, you are always welcome here. Dr. Kauffman and his team believe in meeting you where you are, with no lectures and no judgment. Whatever shape your teeth are in today, the goal is simply to help you move forward.

We would love to welcome you as a patient at our downtown Atlanta dental office. Please call (404) 524-1981 or schedule an appointment online.

What a Thorough Dental Exam Can Catch

The real value of a routine exam is early detection. Dr. Kauffman uses diagnostic technology that lets him see far more than a visual check alone, so we can find problems before they become painful or expensive.
Early Tooth Decay
Laser cavity detection finds decay beneath the surface, often before it is visible or shows up on an x-ray, so we can treat it promptly.
Problems Below the Surface
CBCT 3-D imaging reveals issues in the bone, roots, and sinuses that standard x-rays miss, from infections to early-stage abnormalities.
Oral Cancer
Dr. Kauffman screens for signs of oral cancer at routine visits. His advanced imaging has helped detect serious conditions early, when they are most treatable.
Changes Over Time
Seeing Dr. Kauffman regularly for routine checkups allows him to track your gums, bite, and existing restorations and act on small changes early.

Frequently Asked Questions

A little understanding of what to expect can make it easier to stay current with routine care. Here are answers to some of the questions patients ask most often about cleanings and exams.

How Often Should I Have a Cleaning and Exam?

For most patients, every six months works well. If you have a history of gum disease or other risk factors, Dr. Kauffman may recommend more frequent visits to keep a closer eye on your oral health. He will suggest a schedule based on your individual needs.

Does Insurance Cover Cleanings and Exams?

Most dental insurance plans cover preventive visits like cleanings and exams, often at little or no cost to you. We accept PPO plans, and Dr. Kauffman is an out-of-network provider. Our team can help you understand your coverage before your visit.

Why Do I Need Dental X-Rays, and Are They Safe?

X-rays let Dr. Kauffman see between and beneath your teeth, where decay and other problems often start. He uses digital x-rays, which expose you to significantly less radiation than traditional film, and only takes them when they will provide useful information about your care.

What's the Difference between Regular and Deep Cleanings?

Regular cleanings remove plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and along the gumline, and are part of your routine preventive visits. Deep cleanings, called scaling and root planing, go below the gumline to remove bacteria and tartar when gum disease is present. Dr. Kauffman recommends a deep cleaning only when your gum health calls for it.

What to Expect at Your Dental Exam

Every exam begins with a conversation to see how you're doing and whether you've noticed any changes or issues since your last visit. Then, Dr. Kauffman performs a full oral health exam, including:

  • Checking your teeth for decay, damage, and wear
  • Evaluating your gums for signs of gum disease
  • Reviewing your bite and existing restorations
  • Screening for oral cancer as part of every checkup
  • Imaging when needed. Dr. Kauffman uses digital x-rays and, for more complex concerns, CBCT 3-D imaging that shows details a traditional x-ray cannot. This is how he identifies problems like infections, bone loss, or early abnormalities that might otherwise go unnoticed until they cause symptoms.

If Dr. Kauffman finds something that needs attention, he will explain what he sees, walk you through your options, and help you build a treatment plan that fits your needs. You will always understand why he recommends treatment before agreeing to move forward.

What Happens at Your Dental Cleaning

Even with excellent brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into tartar that you cannot remove at home. This is why regular professional cleanings matter even when your home care is consistent. A typical cleaning includes:

  • Removing plaque and tartar from your teeth and along the gumline, where buildup tends to collect
  • Polishing your teeth to remove surface stains and leave them smooth and clean
  • Flossing thoroughly between teeth to remove any lingering debris
  • Checking your gum health for early signs of disease that may need attention

Cleanings also protect your gums. When plaque is left along the gumline, it can cause gingivitis, an early, reversible form of gum disease that may cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums. Without treatment, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious infection that can damage the bone supporting your teeth and eventually lead to tooth loss. If Dr. Kauffman finds signs of gum disease, he may recommend a deeper cleaning, called scaling and root planing, to remove bacteria and tartar from below the gumline and help your gums heal.

Cleanings and Exams Technology

Laser Cavity Detection

Laser Cavity Detection

Laser cavity detection uses light to identify early signs of decay beneath the tooth surface, often before a cavity is visible to the eye or shows up on an x-ray. Dr. Kauffman uses it during routine exams as an extra layer of screening. This capability allows us to catch and treat decay while it's still small, which often means simpler, less invasive treatment and lower cost.

Intraoral Cameras

Intraoral Cameras

An intraoral camera is a small, pen-sized camera that captures close-up, magnified images of your teeth and gums in real time. Dr. Kauffman uses it during exams to document conditions and show you exactly what he's seeing. This technology benefits you because it means you can see what Dr. Kauffman sees on a screen, making it easier to understand your own oral health and the reasoning behind any treatment he recommends.
