Dental Implants

Dental implants are unique because they’re the only tooth loss solution that replaces a missing tooth from the root up. When placed into the jawbone, the implant fuses with the bone over time, creating a stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture.

Dr. Thomas W. Kauffman has placed and restored dental implants for more than 20 years. With his skill and expertise, he performs the entire process here at our downtown Atlanta dental practice, from the initial evaluation to precise planning with 3-D imaging and surgical placement.

The Importance of Replacing Missing Teeth

When you lose a tooth, there’s no root left to help stimulate the jawbone to stay strong and healthy. Over time, the bone in the area can break down, gradually changing your facial shape. Without the support of a tooth root, surrounding teeth also tend to tilt into the gap, affecting your dental bite. Replacing a missing tooth promptly helps preserve the bone and keeps surrounding teeth stable.

How Dental Implants Work

Dental implant treatment is a multi-step process that typically takes several months from initial evaluation and placement to final restoration.

  • Evaluation — Dr. Kauffman begins with a thorough evaluation using CBCT 3-D imaging to assess bone volume, surrounding anatomy, and the ideal position for each implant. This imaging allows him to anticipate any issues and plan placement precisely before surgery begins.
  • Placement and Healing — During the surgical phase, Dr. Kauffman expertly places the titanium implant post under local anesthesia. Over the next several months, the implant fuses with the surrounding bone, creating a stable foundation for the final restoration.
  • Abutment and Restoration — Once the post integrates fully, we attach an abutment to the implant. This small piece connects the implant to the final restoration, which may be a crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture.

If you are receiving multiple implants or combining implant placement with other procedures, we offer sedation options that allow us to complete more of your treatment in fewer visits.

Advanced Implant Planning Technology

Precise implant placement requires detailed planning. Dr. Kauffman uses CBCT cone beam imaging to produce a full 3-D view of the jaw, bone structure, nerve pathways, and surrounding anatomy.

From that imaging, he creates digital surgical guides that direct implant placement during surgery. This planning reduces variables, improves accuracy, and makes complex cases more predictable.

Implant Solutions We Offer

Dr. Kauffman offers several implant treatment options depending on your goals and the number of missing teeth.

  • Single-Tooth Implants — A single implant post topped with a custom crown replaces one missing tooth. It looks and functions like a natural tooth and does not affect the teeth on either side.
  • Implant-Supported Bridges — Two or more implants can support a bridge to replace several adjacent missing teeth without relying on the neighboring natural teeth for support.[Link: Learn more about implant-supported bridges]
  • Implant-Supported Dentures — Implants can anchor a full or partial denture for a more secure, stable fit. Implant-supported dentures eliminate the movement and need for adhesives that removable dentures do.
  • Full-Arch Restoration (All-on-X) — If you’re missing all or most teeth in an arch, all-on-x is an approach that supports a complete set of fixed prosthetic teeth using as few as four to six implants strategically placed in the jaw. One of the benefits of this approach is restoring an entire arch of missing teeth using fewer implants than traditional methods.

Dental Implants Technology

CBCT Cone Beam Technology

CBCT Cone Beam Technology

CBCT is an ultra-low-dose 3-D imaging system that captures a detailed view of your jaw, teeth, sinuses, and surrounding bone. Dr. Kauffman uses it to plan dental implants, evaluate bone volume, and identify conditions that a standard 2-D x-ray would miss.

For our patients, this means more precise surgical planning, fewer surprises during treatment, and the ability to catch issues like sinus disease or abnormalities early, before they become bigger problems.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you are in good general health and missing one or more teeth, you may be a candidate for dental implants. During your evaluation, Dr. Kauffman considers several factors:

  • Number of missing teeth: Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or a full arch, depending on your situation.
  • Bone volume: You need enough healthy bone to support the implant. CT cone beam imaging gives Dr. Kauffman an accurate picture of bone density and volume before treatment begins. In some cases, he may recommend bone grafting first.
  • Overall oral health: We must address any active gum disease or decay before implant placement. During Dr. Kauffman’s evaluation, he will identify any issues that we should treat first.
  • General health: Certain medical conditions and medications can affect healing. Dr. Kauffman reviews your health history as part of your consultation.

Comfortable Implant Treatment with Sedation

Implant surgery can feel intimidating. The scope of treatment can seem even more overwhelming if you also need extractions, bone grafting, or other restorative work. Sedation dentistry changes that.

Dr. Kauffman offers nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and has advanced training in IV and conscious sedation, so he can safely administer them here at our downtown Atlanta dental practice. Sedation can help you relax, but it also allows us to complete more of your treatment in a single visit. Imagine arriving for one appointment and waking up with significantly more of the work finished than you expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care, dental implants can last 20 years or more, even a lifetime with proper care. Regular cleanings, good home care, and avoiding habits like smoking help protect the implant long term.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most adults with one or more missing teeth are potential candidates. The key factors are adequate bone volume and good overall oral health. Dr. Kauffman evaluates these using digital imaging to identify any concerns before recommending a treatment plan. Even if you have some bone loss, you may be a good implant candidate after bone grafting.

How long does implant treatment take?

Treatment typically takes several months from implant placement to final restoration, most of which is healing time. The surgical appointment itself is usually completed in a few hours.

How much do dental implants cost?

Implant costs depend on the number of implants, the type of restoration, and whether any preparatory procedures are needed. For a full breakdown of what affects implant pricing, visit our Dental Implant Cost Guide. At your consultation, Dr. Kauffman will provide a clear estimate for your specific treatment.
