How should I start choosing a new dentist?

You should take into consideration a dentist’s experience, qualifications, and knowledge regarding their dental specialty. During your initial visit, check to see how comfortable you feel in their office and how well the staff treats you. Feel free to ask your dentist any questions you may have about your dental issue or their treatment plan to see if they might be a good fit.

What can I expect during my first dental examination?

During your first dental visit, your dentist will start by asking you about your dental medical history. They’ll then evaluate your smile to check for signs of underlying issues and periodontal concerns. Afterward, you’ll most likely undergo any necessary X-rays to determine what future procedures you may need to undergo in order to provide your smile with quality care.

Which types of questions should I be asking my dentist?

It’s good to ask your dentist any questions you may have about their practice as well as bring up any concerns that need to be addressed. Common inquiries you should ask include:

  • Where did you study dentistry?
  • How many years have you been in practice?
  • Do you have recommendations from past patients?
  • What sedation dentistry options are available?
  • Are you a part of any dental associations?
  • Do you have any honors or awards?
What habits can help promote better oral health?

The cornerstone to maintaining a healthy smile is having a consistent at-home oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing in between your meals. It’s also important to visit your dentist for biannual checkups to ensure there aren’t any underlying issues like gum disease. They’ll also recommend the best practices for protecting your teeth to ensure a healthy, long-lasting smile.
