Discover which kind of dentures could replace your missing teeth.
Dentures have been around for a very long time, providing an easy and quick solution for replacing everything from a few missing teeth to an entire row of teeth. Thanks to advanced technology, dentures are made to look just like natural teeth. Of course, before you turn to our Atlanta restorative dentist Dr. Thomas Kauffman for dentures it’s important that you understand more about the different kinds of dentures and what they can do for you.
Partial and Full Dentures
The two main types of dentures are partial and full dentures. The names already give it away, but partial dentures are placed when you still have some healthy natural teeth present and full dentures are placed if you are dealing with total tooth loss.
Dentures are made up of a plastic base, which is designed to look just like gum tissue. On top of the plastic base sits false teeth. Since no two patients have the exact same dental measurements, dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth.
Of course, if you have to get teeth extracted you don’t want to wait for the gums to fully heal before getting your teeth back. This is particularly important for those dealing with complete tooth loss. This is where immediate dentures come again.
Immediate dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth but they can be placed the same day as your tooth extraction. In some cases, they may also protect the gums so they heal more effectively. Plus, you won’t have to be without teeth while your gums heal. Immediate dentures are only a temporarily solution. Once your gums fully heal then your permanent dentures can be placed.
If you are an adult who has maintained good oral health despite tooth loss, then you may be able to turn to implants to support your dentures. This is a great option for denture wearers who may find that their oral prosthetic slips and moves around in their mouth while chewing or speaking. This is a common issue for those who have dentures.
Fortunately, by placing dental implants along the jawbone we can provide a stable foundation from which to support your false teeth to prevent them from shifting around. Plus, implants also provide your jawbone with the stimulation it needs to remain strong and healthy after tooth loss.
