Find out if it’s time you started weighing the pros and cons of dental surgery in Atlanta.
While hearing the words “oral surgery” is never a walk in the park, sometimes it is a necessity if you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Luckily, our Atlanta, GA dental surgeon, Dr. Thomas Kauffman, is a pro when it comes to treating patients who need surgery.
Here are the most common reasons why someone may need dental surgery:
If you are missing one or more permanent teeth you will require treatment to replace these teeth. Of course, not everyone chooses dental implants, but if you have then you’ll need to undergo surgery in order to get your implants.
These small metal posts are surgically embedded into the jawbone where they act like tooth roots. Over time, the bone and tissue start to heal around the implant and fuse together with it so that it becomes a permanent part of your jawbone. Once the implant is set, a dental crown, bridge or dentures can be placed over top of it to restore your smile.
Some people suffer from jaw misalignment that is severe enough that it can affect their ability to speak or chew without experiencing pain, stiffness or other issues. Some patients suffer from such severe TMJ disorders that they can’t properly open or close their jaws without problems. While conservative treatments may be enough to provide relief, if you are dealing with severe symptoms that don’t seem to respond to traditional treatments then our Atlanta dental surgeon may recommend getting surgery.
Most of the time wisdom teeth do not come in properly. They may become impacted or affect the health or alignment of other teeth. If this is the case for you then it’s better to have wisdom teeth taken out. If your wisdom teeth have fully erupted they can easily be pulled, but those with impacted wisdom teeth will require surgery to have the teeth fully removed from their sockets.
If you’ve ignored your tooth loss, chances are you are also dealing with some bone loss. Once a tooth falls out there is no longer tooth roots in that area to stimulate the jawbone. As a result, the bone starts to deteriorate. Of course, this isn’t the only problem that can cause bone loss; however, if you want to get dental implants but don’t have enough bone density, we can fix that with bone grafting surgery.
